Nickel-A-Dance: Jamil Sharif New Orleans ExtravaganzaNickel-A-Dance is a free, family-friendly jazz concert series in New Orleans, celebrating the city's rich musical heritage. Founded in 1994, it features top local jazz musicians performing classic jazz, blues, and swing. Originally held at Café Brasil on Frenchmen Street, the series now takes place at Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro on Sundays from 3:00--6:00 PM. The event is open to all ages and aims to make live jazz accessible to everyone. Jamil Sharif is a celebrated New Orleans trumpeter, composer, and bandleader whose music reflects the rich traditions of his hometown. The son of renowned trumpeter Emery Humphrey Thompson (Umar Sharif), Jamil studied with New Orleans legends including Ellis Marsalis, Alvin Batiste, Roger Dickerson Sr., and Edward , "rdquo" -> Kidd" Jordan. His career includes performances with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, international festivals and concerts, Broadway productions, and contributions to the soundtracks of films including The Big Easy, Undercover Blues, and Ray. He has also released three critically acclaimed albums. For this special performance, Sharif leads The New Orleans Extravaganza in a spirited journey through traditional jazz, swing, classic R&B, and big band music.
