James Rivers Tribute with Peter ChoSnug Harbor celebrates the remarkable legacy of New Orleans saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, and Tremé native James Rivers, who passed away on July 5, 2026, at age 89. A beloved figure in New Orleans music, Rivers enjoyed a career spanning more than seven decades. He mastered tenor, alto and soprano saxophone, flute, harmonica, vocals, and even bagpipes, bringing his distinctive sound and versatility to jazz, blues, R&B, funk, gospel, and rock. He toured and recorded with legendary artists including Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Huey , "rdquo" -> Piano" Smith & the Clowns, Deacon John, Professor Longhair, Earl King, and Allen Toussaint, and his playing can be heard on classic New Orleans recordings including Frankie Ford's , "rdquo" -> Sea Cruise" and Al Johnson's , "rdquo" -> Carnival Time." He also performed on the soundtracks of several Clint Eastwood films, including Tightrope and The Bridges of Madison County. Rivers was a fixture at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, performing there for decades, and his own James Rivers Movement became an important part of his musical legacy. His longtime band included pianist Peter Cho, who continues to carry forward the music and spirit of their collaboration. Rivers described Cho as the keyboard player in his longstanding group, alongside bassist Millard Green and drummer Cameron Woods. This special tribute honors James Rivers' extraordinary contributions to New Orleans music, celebrating the songs, sounds, and musical traditions that defined his remarkable career.
